Are individuals born good leaders or can leadership be learned?

Answered By Editor

It is true that some are born with leadership qualities. Nevertheless, it is certainly not a prerequisite to leadership. One can definitely develop leadership qualities with proper learning. Most people develop leadership skills from life experiences. Leadership is mostly developed through teamwork experiences and believing in yourself. Your upbringing also helps in how your leadership is developed.

So, leaders are both born and made. It greatly depends on types of leadership skills.

Some recent research says personality profiles explain approximately 25% of leadership effectiveness, and IQ explains 6%. These same studies claim that our genes explain about 30% of what is called "leader emergence." Likewise, about 17-18% of leader emergence can be attributed to specific job experience.

Nearly 60% of transformational leadership (where charisma is important) can be explained by genes. Generally, situational leadership has little to do with genes.

Of course, no one is a perfect leader, and training, courses, and coaching can help one acquire and perfect the needed skills.
